Parametric Wooden Globe Lamp – Baltic Birch, Dimmable LED Touch Sensor
Parametric Design
Procedurally designed globe with a dimmable LED touch switch.
Made from 0.5 inch Baltic Birch.
Artist
Ben McAllister
This globe-shaped wooden lamp is built from precision-cut, ½" thick Baltic birch plywood, with each piece designed to fit in place using a self-supporting frame. The structure holds together through its own tension, making it as much a feat of engineering as it is a functional light source. Designed entirely through a parametric 3D process, the result is clean, modern, and structurally sound.
A dimmable LED ring sits inside the central opening and is controlled by a touch sensor hidden in the base—tap to turn it on or off, hold to adjust brightness. Finished with multiple coats of lacquer, the surface has a smooth satin finish and light scratch resistance.
This is build version 01. Assembly is quite a challenge here, especially as it uses its own tension to support itself. I'd like to make a follow-up design with a more robust base and a split latitude ring design.
